Shamanic Meditation

When you wake up in the morning, draw back your curtain and feel the sun caress your face, you are immersed in shamanic meditation. Since shamanism is primal belief system long before organised religion, it derives its power in what appears to us to be very simple practices. When I take a second out of my day to smell the roses or tilt my face towards a ray of sunlight it fills my whole being with such joy and profound happiness. I challenge you to find any hymn, text or prayer that makes you feel as good, as fast as that. All those things are useful and fulfilling in their own way, but the shamanic meditation should not be discounted because it is not wrapped in religion or tradition.

Shamanism is about realising that there is a connection between all things; rocks, trees, animals, humans- we are all one. This connection, often termed ‘Spirit’ can be accessed by a Shaman using the seven levels of shamanic consciousness in order to heal, prophesise, communicate telepathically and even astral project. However, for those of us who are not yet as spiritually advanced as Shamans and cannot even fathom the rigorous mental, physical and spiritual challenges required to achieve their abilities- there is still a way to tap into Spirit.

Shamanic meditation is available to everyone. Like I mentioned earlier you may already be doing it without even knowing. But, when you become more aware of your commune with nature and all that is around you, you will be able to delve deeper into the meditation and find a sense of peace. Shamanic meditation is not hard, some people like to use certain phrases or affirmations to guide them, such as “I am one with nature, the plants, the animals. The river of life flows through me and I am free and whole”.  I realise I have been doing a form of shamanic meditation my whole life; I sit by a stream and lose myself in the babbling brook, I walk through a meadow and find a home among the sounds and feel of the earth beneath my feet and the wind in my hair. At night I, like so many, look at the moon and its radiance illuminates my consciousness. The troubles of my day, work, family, money, melt away and I am reminded that I am not alone, that there is a connection in all things. The stars whisper that the secrets of the cosmos are not so far away and rather than reach out, I should look within. It is in these moments that we are to realise we are home, no matter where we are. It is in these moments the Universe offers us peace and knowledge.

In the beginning of this type of journey for amateurs like you and I, there is not an exact science to connecting with Spirit. It is more important I believe to make a connection regardless of the ‘how’ and let Spirit guide you. Amidst the sometimes constant rush of modern life, shamanic meditation is a window into a place of peace.

May Spirit be with you always.

  1. The power source is the same for everyone, it is only our ability to listen that varies. With effort and willingness, everyone is capable of reaching enlightenment—full communication with the Divine.
